THE EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY (NP) ENDORSEMENT
This new endorsement program prepares teachers to utilize technology resources for their own teaching and for student learning in classes for which they hold other endorsements in the State of Michigan. Teachers holding the endorsement are considered well-prepared to teach introductory computer-related classes for which no specific endorsement is needed such as Computers, Computer Literacy, Keyboarding, Word Processing, Computer Applications, Web Design, and Introduction to the Internet.
The NP endorsement program is based on a set of national standards for advanced programs from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the same professional organization that developed the National Education Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) and for Students (NETS). A panel of educators from higher education and K-12 examined and adapted these standards for the State of Michigan and in 2002 the State Board of Education approved the standards as foundation for all approved programs.
Course Requirements
The endorsement courses are offered throughout the year and can be taken in the Online, Hybrid or Overseas programs. Teachers must enroll in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program once the Educational Technology Certificate courses have been completed.
The endorsement requires the three courses (9 graduate credits) of the Educational Technology Certificate program:
- CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Computers (3 credits)
- CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education (3 credits)
- CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Problems of Practice (3 credits)
In addition to four courses (12 graduate credits) from the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program:
- CEP 800: Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings (3 credits)
- CEP 815: Technology and Leadership (3 credits)
- CEP 820: Teaching K-12 Students Online (3 credits)
- CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research (3 credits)
After completing the 21 graduate credits for the endorsement teachers only need 9 more graduate credits (3 courses) to complete the Master's program.
Upon completion of the 21 Educational Technology endorsement credits, a Program Plan will be submitted to the Student Affairs Office. At this time you will need to apply for the NP endorsement using the following form: http://www.educ.msu.edu/programs/forms/endform.pdf.
Past Master's Students
The NP endorsement may be awarded to previous Master of Arts in Educational Technology students who completed the program between 2003 and 2006. Contact the program coordinator at msumaet@msu.edu to initiate this request. Additional course work or assignments may be required to receive the endorsement.
